Fraxinus – Ash – <\/strong><\/p>\n

There are about 65 species of fast growing, deciduous, rarely evergreen trees, in this genus.\u00a0 They occur in woodland, mainly in the Northern Hemisphere.\u00a0 The leaves are opposite and pinnate, light to dark green, 2-20″ long.\u00a0 The flowers are borne in terminal or axillary panicles or racemes, from spring to early summer.\u00a0 Ashes are grown for their habit and foliage.\u00a0 Most have inconspicuous, petalless flowers, although some, including F. ornus and F. sieboldiana are grown for their ornamental flowers.\u00a0 F. americana, F. pennsylvanica, and F. uhdei usually bears male and female flowers on separate plants, both are need to produce the single-seeded, winged fruits.\u00a0 Ashes are excellent specimen tree for woodland or coastal gardens.\u00a0 They are widely planted as a street and park tree.\u00a0 Some are valued for their timber.<\/p>\n

Grow in fertile, moist but well drained, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun.\u00a0 They need space for root system.\u00a0 They are tolerant of coastal salt air, exposed positions, urban pollution, and heavy clay.<\/p>\n

Prone to Mycosphaerella leaf spot, powdery mildew, rust, brown cubical rot, white rots, wilt, anthracnose, cankers, twig diebacks, borers, leaf miners, carpenter worm, ash sawfly, fall webworm, <\/em>and scale insects.<\/em><\/p>\n

F. quadrangulata – Blue Ash<\/strong> – This slender, but open, rounded crown tree from Southeastern and Central USA, grows 50-80′ feet tall and 50′ feet wide. It has thin gray bark breaking up into large flattened scales. The distinctive feature is the square twigs often drawn out into wings.\u00a0 The leaves consist of 7-11 large egg to lance shaped, yellow green, coarsely toothed, leaflets.\u00a0 It produces purplish stamened flowers appear in spring before the leaves.\u00a0 The oblong winged fruit is scalloped at the tip.<\/p>\n
