Pieris <\/strong>–<\/p>\n

There are about 7 evergreen shrubs rarely small trees in the Ericaceae family, in this genus.\u00a0 They occur in forest and on hillsides in the Himalayas, Eastern Asia, North America, West Indies and Cuba.\u00a0 They are grown for their alternate or spiral arranged, oblong or lance shaped to obovate, smooth edged or toothed, pointed, glossy, mid green to dark green leaves, often attractively colored when young, and their terminal panicles of small, bell shaped spring borne usually white flowers, sometimes scented, are 1\/4-3\/8″ long.\u00a0 Grow in a shrub border or in a woodland garden, or rock garden.\u00a0 Leaves may cause severe discomfort if ingested.<\/p>\n

Grow in moderately fertile, humus rich, moist but well drained, acidic soil in full sun or light shade.<\/p>\n

Prone to canker, dieback, phytophthora root rot, lacebug, <\/em>and menatodes.<\/em><\/p>\n

P. \u2018Bert Chandler<\/strong>\u2019 – This conical shrub grows 6′ feet tall and 5′ feet wide. It produces lance shaped, finely toothed leaves, to 4″ long, bright pink when young, turning creamy yellow and white, then dark green. In spring it rarely bears, it\u2019s small white flowers, held in pendent panicles to 4″ long.<\/p>\n
