Festuca – Fescue – <\/strong><\/p>\n

There are about 300-400 species of deciduous or evergreen, rhizomatous, often tufted, perennial grasses, in this genus.\u00a0 They occur in grassland, woodland, edges, and stream margins throughout temperate zones.\u00a0 Many are grown as a turf or pasture grass.\u00a0 A few ornamental species have attractive inflorescences, but most are grown for their foliage, which is often blue green or blue-gray.\u00a0 The 5 to 9 veined, lance shaped leaves are flat, folded, or rolled.\u00a0 Dense or loose, branched panicles of flattened spikelets, with glaucous or brownish green inflorescences, are borne from spring to summer.\u00a0 Grow fescues singly or in groups in a border or rock garden to provide foliage contrast with alpines,<\/p>\n

Grow in poor to moderately fertile, dry, well drained soil in full sun.<\/p>\n

Prone to ergot, powdery mildew, rust, smut, brown patch, Helminthoporium leaf spot, net blotch, pink snow mold, anthracnose, eye spot, <\/em>and summer blight.<\/em><\/p>\n

Festuca glauca \u2018Seeigel\u2019 – Festuca glauca \u2018Sea Urchin\u2019\u00a0– Blue Fescue – Gray Fescue <\/strong>– This clump forming, evergreen, perennial grass, from Northern and Southern temperate regions grows 12″ tall and 10″ wide. It produces lax, erect or arching, narrowly linear, inrolled, 9-ribbed, smooth, hair-fine, spiky, blue-green leaves, 3-8″ long in a tight bun. In early and mid summer it bears dense, obovate, shortly branched panicles, to 4″ long, with spikelets of 4-7 violet flushed, blue-green flowers.<\/p>\n
