There are about 60 species of erect spreading or prostrate annuals or short-lived perennials, used as houseplants, in this genus. \u00a0Grown as ornamentals, leaf vegetables, and grain crops but some are regarded as a weed. \u00a0Found in wastelands and in temperature and tropical regions worldwide. \u00a0They have alternate often-colorful leaves. \u00a0They bear large upright or pendent catkin, drooping tassel like cymes of numerous densely packed small red or green flowers from early summer to early autumn followed by colored seed heads.<\/p>\n

Indoors grow in soil based potting mix in full light, water freely throughout summer and provide high humidity. \u00a0\u00a0Where able to grow outside, grow in a sunny dry position and protect from strong winds, in fertile well drained, manure or humus rich site. \u00a0Prune when young to thicken growth.<\/p>\n

Prone to snails, caterpillars, aphids <\/i><\/em>as well as white rust, brown rust, Cercospora leaf spot<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and phyllasticta leaf spot, root rot, aster yellow<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and virus disease.<\/p>\n

Amaranthus tricolor <\/b><\/strong>\u2018Joseph\u2019s Coat\u2019<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Chinese spinach \u2013 Tampala<\/b><\/strong> \u2013 This erect bushy, fast growing annual is native to tropical Africa and Asia, it grows 4 \u00bd\u2019 feet tall and 12-18\u201d wide. \u00a0It bears 8\u201d long, egg shape or elliptic shaped multicolor leaves crimson upper leaves and mix of green yellow and brown lower leaves. \u00a0It bears insignificant tiny green or red flowers from summer to early autumn. \u00a0This variety has given rise to many strains which some are used as leaf vegetables.<\/p>\n
