There are about 60 species of erect spreading or prostrate annuals or short-lived perennials, used as houseplants, in this genus. \u00a0Grown as ornamentals, leaf vegetables, and grain crops but some are regarded as a weed. \u00a0Found in wastelands and in temperature and tropical regions worldwide. \u00a0They have alternate often-colorful leaves. \u00a0They bear large upright or pendent catkin, drooping tassel like cymes of numerous densely packed small red or green flowers from early summer to early autumn followed by colored seed heads.<\/p>\n

Indoors grow in soil based potting mix in full light, water freely throughout summer and provide high humidity. \u00a0\u00a0Where able to grow outside, grow in a sunny dry position and protect from strong winds, in fertile well drained, manure or humus rich site. \u00a0Prune when young to thicken growth.<\/p>\n

Prone to snails, caterpillars, aphids <\/i><\/em>as well as white rust, brown rust, Cercospora leaf spot<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and phyllasticta leaf spot, root rot, aster yellow<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and virus disease.<\/p>\n

Amaranthus cruentus <\/b><\/strong>\u2018Golden Giant\u2019 <\/b><\/strong>\u2013 Prince\u2019s Feather \u2013 Purple amaranth \u2013 Red amaranth<\/b><\/strong> \u2013 This annual is native to tropical Northern and Southern America and grows 6\u2019 feet tall and 18\u201d inches wide. \u00a0\u00a0It produces ovate to lance shaped coarsely hairy, 6\u201d long purplish green leaves. \u00a0In summer to early autumn it bears pendent cylindrical terminal cymes 24\u201d inches long of tightly packed red flowers suffused with green followed by prominent golden seed heads.<\/p>\n
