Adonis<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are about 20 species of annuals and perennials in this genus from Europe and the cooler parts of Asia in alpine habitats. Named after the Greek god Adonis beloved of Aphrodive who when was killed by a boar and the drops of blood made this annual species red. \u00a0Fern like leaves mostly finely divided especially at the uppermost parts. \u00a0The leaves on the stems form a sort of nest the single bowl shape flower rests. \u00a0The leaves may die back in summer in some species. Perennials are usually have a yellow flower and the annuals are red. \u00a0More frequently the perennials are grown.<\/p>\n

They require cool climate and warm dry summers in a sheltered spot in full sun in moist fertile soil with high humus content and varies species like acidic or alkaline soil.<\/p>\n

Adonis aestivalis \u2013 Pheasant\u2019s Eye<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 An erect annual from central and Southern Europe growing 16\u201d high and 1\u2019 foot wide. \u00a0They bear 1 \u00bc-2\u201d long linear thread like leaflets and a deep red, cup shaped flowers in summer. \u00a0The flower is \u00bd-1\u201d wide with a blackish centered with 5 spreading petals and a sepal pressed to the petals back. \u00a0An effective border plant.<\/p>\n
