Acorus \u2013 Sweet Flag<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

An unusual genus consisting of only 2 species, one deciduous and the other an evergreen grass and some cultivars have been made. \u00a0It\u2019s marginal aquatic native to riverbanks and marshes in the northern hemisphere and Eastern Asia. \u00a0In mid summer flower spikes bear inconspicuous flowers resembling small horn 2-3\u201d long, but are grown for their foliage. \u00a0Leaves are sweet scented flattened fans. \u00a0In folk they have been used for medicine, perfume, and food flavoring.<\/p>\n

Easily grown in boggy or very moist spot in shallow water at a ponds edge. \u00a0They require full sun, and they are not frost hardy. \u00a0Prune to limit spread and can be divided. \u00a0Acorus gramineus will live partial submerged but will be short lived.<\/p>\n

Prone to wet root rot, dry root rots, rust<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and several fungal leaf spots<\/i><\/em>\u00a0occur.<\/p>\n

Acorus calamus \u2018Variegatus\u2019 \u2013 Variegated Sweet Flag<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Widespread in Europe, Asia and North America. \u00a0Grows 5\u2019 feet tall and 2\u2019 feet wide. \u00a0This deciduous aquatic perennial has aromatic bright 1\u201d wide green leaves stripped creamy white and occasionally has wrinkled edges. \u00a0Young foliage may be pinkish in spring. \u00a0\u00a0Below the leaves in spring and summer 3\u201d inch long pale green spikes emerge. \u00a0If used as aquatic plants do not submerge deeper then 9 inches.<\/p>\n
