There are over 300 species of evergreen and deciduous perennials, climbers, and subshrubs, in this genus. \u00a0They are from sandy and coastal sites in Europe, Asia and Africa. \u00a0They produce arching, and spreading or climbing stems that hold scale like leaves and more prominent leaf-like stems which in some species have straight or curved spines. \u00a0It bears slightly scented white or pink flowers borne singly or in racemes or small clusters are followed by red, orange, or purple berries \u00bd\u201d wide. \u00a0\u00a0The cold hardiness varies greatly between species and may need to be grown under glass. \u00a0Foliage is used in floral arrangements and the Asparagus officinalis is edible.<\/p>\n

When grown indoors grow in soil based potting mix in bright filtered light. \u00a0Water freely from early spring to mid autumn and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly. \u00a0Water more sparingly in winter.<\/p>\n

When grown out doors plant 12\u201d apart from one another, in fertile moist but well drained soil in sheltered site in partial shade. \u00a0Do not harvest the young shoots or spears until third spring. \u00a0Divide in early spring.<\/p>\n

Prone to Fusarium crown rot, Helminthosporium leaf spots, Cercospora leaf spots, rust, anthracnose,<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and canker<\/i><\/em>\u00a0occur. \u00a0Slugs, spider mites<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and aphids<\/i><\/em>\u00a0may be problem.<\/p>\n

Asparagus schoberoides<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This herbaceous erect to arching perennial from Asia grows to 18-24\u201d tall and in breadth. \u00a0It produces fern-like foliage with clusters of 6-12 leaf like stems, \u00bd\u201d long. \u00a0In early summer it bears axillary clusters of tiny cream white flowers that are followed by red berries.<\/p>\n
