Arctostaphylos \u2013 Comarostaphylis \u2013 Bearberry \u2013 Manzanita <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n There are around 50 species of prostrate or upright shrubs or small trees that are all evergreen except for one species, in this genus. They occur mainly from Western North America, mainly in California, or Mexico. \u00a0Native to a range of habitats like moist or dry areas from coastal scrub to mountain slopes, pine forest, and high boggy land. Mostly have very ornamental bark, purple, red, or orange that\u2019s peels in thin shreds or flakes. \u00a0From woody stems they carry alternate, simple un-toothed or un-lobed or toothed leathery leaves. \u00a0\u00a0They bear small terminal panicles or racemes of tiny, white or pink, bell or urn shaped flowers 1\/8-1\/4\u201d long followed by spherical fruits \u00bc-1\/2\u201d wide.<\/p>\n Fruits of some species have been used for juicing and also to make flour. \u00a0Their tough plants that can survive brush fires. \u00a0Arctostaphylos uva-usi leaves are used for tanning, and in Russia as a tea, in the U.K. it has been used as a urinary antiseptic since the thirteenth century. \u00a0Some are good as groundcovers, in rock gardens, or in open areas of a woodland garden.<\/p>\n When grown indoors grow in acidic, lime free potting mix in full light. \u00a0During growing season water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly, and more sparingly in winter.<\/p>\n When grown outdoors grow in moist but well drained moderately fertile, acidic soil in full sun or partial shade. \u00a0Shelter less hardy species from the wind.<\/p>\n Prone to Exobasidium bud, leaf galls<\/i><\/em>, and variety of other fungal diseases on leaves, stems, and fruit.<\/p>\n Arctostaphylos glandulosa \u2013 Eastwood Manzanita<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This rounded shrub from Oregon grows to 6\u2019 feet tall and in breadth. \u00a0It has smooth red-brown bark. \u00a0It produces ovate to lance shaped, leathery matte green leaves to 2\u201d long, which are covered in sticky hairs on either side but soon wears off. \u00a0In late winter or early spring it bears small white flowers in racemes to 1 \u00bd\u201d long. \u00a0Sticky red-brown fruit follows flowers in summer.<\/p>\n Zones 8-10<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Arctostaphylos \u2013 Comarostaphylis \u2013 Bearberry \u2013 Manzanita There are around 50 species of prostrate or upright shrubs or small trees that are all evergreen except for one species, in this genus.
