Alnus \u2013<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>Alder<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are about 35 species, occurring in cold to cool temperature regions in the Northern Hemisphere in this genus. \u00a0They are deciduous, semi evergreen-to-evergreen trees, which are fast growing and can be short, lived. \u00a0They\u2019re unique for carrying microorganisms in their roots that can turn air into nitrogen to fix depleted soils. \u00a0They bear alternate leafs larger and thicker then the Birch\u2019s which they are closely related, with smooth and wavy to jaggedly toothed edges. \u00a0Flowers are tiny but arranged in catkin (dense cluster of scale like flowers as of a Birch), male catkins are long and thin hanging in profuse bunches at the ends of branches, female catkins are short and barrel-shaped in less conspicuous groups. \u00a0The bark is brown or blackish and sometimes wrinkled. \u00a0Used as a shade tree or nurse tree or a windbreaker. \u00a0They have little fall colors.<\/p>\n

Sun loving trees that likes moist soils such as bottom of the valleys or were soil is too waterlog or that are very infertile or polluted.<\/p>\n

Should be pruned early to a single truck and trim branches above head height.<\/p>\n

Prone to Phytophtora root rot<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and mealybugs.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

Alnus rhombifolia \u2013 White Alder<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Found on streamsides in Western North America and grows 100\u2019 feet tall but 30-50\u2019 feet is more common with a spreading rounded crown. \u00a0It bears diamond shaped, 3-5\u201d long leaves initially very downy before becoming dark shinny green, and are toothed with undersides with a yellow-green down. \u00a0In early spring groups of 2-7 pendent 4\u201d long yellow brown male catkins appear before the leaves.<\/p>\n
