There are over 700 species of evergreen or semi-evergreen terrestrial and epiphytic ferns, in this genus. \u00a0They are found in a wide range of habitats. \u00a0They produce short erect, or creeping rhizomes that bear tufts of fronds, which may be feathery or bipinnate but could be unevenly divided. \u00a0Some forms \u201cbird\u2019s nest\u201d in which the fronds are smooth, un-lobed, un-toothed that overlap to form a nest, in which organic matter collects. \u00a0\u00a0Sori are linear and usually run parallel along the midribs towards the edge of the fronds. \u00a0They\u2019re great for many situations in wall crevices, rock gardens, shady border, woodland garden even as a houseplant.<\/p>\n

When grown outdoors grow in humus rich, moist but well-drained soil with additional grit in partial shade. \u00a0Divide in early spring.<\/p>\n

Prone to scale insects, mealy bugs,<\/i><\/em>\u00a0deformation due to over fertilization, and bacterial leaf disease<\/i><\/em>, and foliar nematodes<\/i><\/em>\u00a0can occur.<\/p>\n

Asplenium scolopendrium <\/b><\/strong>Ramocristatum Group <\/b><\/strong>\u2013 Phyllitis scolopendrium <\/b><\/strong>Ramocristatum Group <\/b><\/strong>\u2013 Scolopendrium vulgare <\/b><\/strong>Ramocristatum Group <\/b><\/strong>\u2013 Hart\u2019s Tongue Fern \u2013<\/b><\/strong> These tetraploid terrestrial evergreen fern grows to 12\u201d tall and spreads to 20\u201d wide. \u00a0From erect short creeping rhizomes it sprouts many, fronds with each divided, lightly crested at the tip eventually forming a ball of shiny green fronds that are leathery, glossy bright green to 16\u201d or more long. \u00a0Fronds are heart shaped at the base often with wavy edges. \u00a0\u00a0Sori are arranged in herringbone fashion.<\/p>\n
