Ailanthus \u2013 Siris<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are about 6 species in this genus of vigorous evergreen deciduous trees and shrubs. \u00a0\u00a0They originate in woodland China and from South East Asia to Australia. \u00a0They bear large alternate pinnate leaves and small greenish yellow flowers borne in large stalked clusters in leaf axis towards tips of the branches. \u00a0Male flowers are unpleasantly scented and may cause allergic reaction. \u00a0Both male and female species are needed to produce fruit. \u00a0In summer female trees develop masses winged papery fruits that are very decorative.<\/p>\n

The name Ailanthus is taken form the Moluccana name \u2018ailanto\u2019 for Ailanthus moluccana meaning sky tree, which is reputedly inspired the common name \u2018tree of heaven\u2019.<\/p>\n

Grow in deep fertile well-drained soil in sun or partial shade in warm temperature areas but will survive in moist climates. \u00a0Able to adapts to urban areas that will also tolerant hard pruning.<\/p>\n

Prone Verticillium wilt fungal, stem galls<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and Cristulariella rust.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

Ailanthus altissima \u2013 Ailanthus glandulosa \u2013 Tree of Heaven<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This deciduous tree is native to North and West China grows 80\u2019 feet tall and 50\u2019 feet wide was introduced to Europe in the mid 1800\u2019s. \u00a0It forms a dense rounded crown. \u00a0Valued for its ability to withstand grimy urban conditions. \u00a0The leafs open reddish green that turn mid green, and when bruised excrete an unpleasant smell. Their oblong-elliptical pinnate leafs are composed of up to 30 leaflets. \u00a0Mid summer female trees bear terminal panicles 12\u201d across of small green flowers followed masses of red brown fruit early autumn.<\/p>\n
