Hosta – Plantain Lily –<\/b><\/p>\n
There are about 70 species of mostly clump forming, occasionally rhizomatous or stoloniferous perennials, in this genus.\u00a0 They occur from sunbaked cliffs, rocky stream sides, woodland, and alpine meadows in China, Korea, Japan, and Eastern Russia.\u00a0 Numerous hybrids have also been developed, mainly in the USA.\u00a0 Hostas are grown primarily for their bold foliage, produced in dense mounds of overlapping, ovate to heart shaped or lance shaped leaves.\u00a0 The leaves may be green, yellow, gray-blue, or variegated, and are often glaucous.\u00a0 One sided racemes of bell, trumpet or spider shaped flowers, to 1 1\/4″ long, are borne on usually leafless sometimes leafy stems, mainly in summer.\u00a0 They are followed by oblong, green, later brown seed capsules.\u00a0 Plant height given in the description below refer to the mounds of foliage, flower stems heights, are given separately.<\/span><\/p>\n Hostas may be grown as accent plants or as ground covers under deep-rooted deciduous tree, in a mixed or herbaceous border, or near water, hostas are excellent for a rock garden, a peat bed, or containers.<\/span><\/p>\n Grow in fertile, moist but well drained, neutral soil.\u00a0 Hostas are shade tolerant and grow best win full morning sun in Northern climates, and filtered shade in South North America.\u00a0 Chinese species require full sun to bloom properly.\u00a0 Hostas will tolerate drought, although a summer mulch to retain moisture is usually beneficial.\u00a0 Feed regularly during the growing season.\u00a0 Divide in late summer to early spring.\u00a0 Most hosta are hardy to <\/span>Zones 3-9.<\/b><\/p>\n Prone to <\/span>slugs and snails, vine weevil, viruses, <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>nematodes.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n H. \u2018Ground Master\u2019<\/b> – This vigorous, stoloniferous, prostrate perennial grows 10″ tall and 22″ wide.\u00a0 It produces ovate to lance shaped, matte, olive green leaves, 5″ long, with wavy, irregular cream edges, fading to white.\u00a0 Mature plants (after about 4 years if no divided) have broader leaves and wider edges.\u00a0 In summer, it bears funnel shaped purple flowers, atop of straight
