Genus of 150-175 or more evergreen, semi evergreen, and deciduous shrubs, sometimes trees, from thickets and woodland, mainly in North temperate regions, but some extend to Southeast Asia and south America, within the Adoxacea family. \u00a0They are grown for their fruits, flowers, and some for their autumn coloring. \u00a0They produce lance to rounded, smooth or toothed edged, sometimes lobed leaves arranged in opposite pairs, occasionally in whorls of 3, they are usually rough and prominently veined. \u00a0The sometimes strongly fragrant, white or cream or pink flushed or wholly pink flowers are salverform to tubular. \u00a0They are borne in terminal or axillary panicles, clusters, corymbs, or cymes, which are often spherical or domed, \u00a0Some species have flowers in flattened heads similar to those of \u201clacecaps\u201d hydrangeas, in which the small, fertile central flowers are surrounded by larger flat or saucer shaped, sterile flowers. \u00a0The ornamental fruits are usually spherical or oval and may be red, blue, or black-purple, some are edible others are poisonous.<\/p>\n

Viburnums are suitable for a shrub border or woodland garden, hedging, and attracting wildlife. \u00a0If fruits are desired, plant several seedlings of the same species together.<\/p>\n

Grow in any moderately fertile, moist but well drained soil in full sun or partial shade, most are drought tender. \u00a0Where not hardy, shelter from cold drying winds. \u00a0Most deciduous Viburnums tolerate hard pruning.<\/p>\n

Prone to gray mold (Botrytis), rust, downy mildew, powdery mildew, wood rot, verticillium wilt, leaf spots, dieback, aphids, scale insects, weevils, Japanese beetle, mealybugs, tree hoppers<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and lepidoptera<\/i><\/em>.<\/p>\n

V. carlesii \u2013 Korean Spice Viburnum \u2013 Korean Viburnum<\/b><\/strong>\u2013 This dense, bushy, deciduous shrub is native to Korea and Japan grows 5-6\u2019 feet tall and wide. \u00a0When leaves first emerge they are bronze tinted, maturing to pointed oval, irregularly toothed, dark green leaves, 2-4\u201d long, with paler undersides, often turning purple-red in autumn. \u00a0In mid and late spring, pink buds open to tubular, very fragrant, white flowers that may have a pink flush to them. \u00a0The flowers are \u00bd\u201d across, produced in domed, terminal corymbs, to 3\u201d across, they are followed by circular red fruit, \u00bc\u201d long, ripening to black.<\/p>\n
