There are about 70 species of evergreen or deciduous, rhizomatous perennial in this genus. \u00a0Found from mountainous or upland areas, often in moist places in rough grass or along stream sides, in Southern and Eastern tropical Africa. \u00a0Most are clump forming, with arching, tufted, linear to strap shaped, light to mid green or blue green leaves. \u00a0In deciduous species and hybrids, these leaves are usually thin, grass like, and 4-39\u201d long, in evergreens, they are broader, keeled or strap shaped, and to 5\u2019 feet long. \u00a0Erect, usually dense, spike race3mes, 2-16\u201d long, of numerous pendent, occasionally erect, tubular or cylindrical flowers, 1\/8-2\u201d long, are borne well above the foliage. \u00a0They are red, orange, yellow, white, or greenish white, some open red, then turn to yellow, making 2 colored racemes. \u00a0Numerous cultivars have been raised, ranging in size from dwarf plants, 20\u201d tall, to tall plants, to 6\u2019 feet high. \u00a0Grow in a herbaceous border. \u00a0They tolerates coastal conditions.<\/p>\n

Grow in deep, fertile, humus rich, moist but well drained preferably sandy soil, in full sun or partial shade. \u00a0Mulch young plants with straw or leave for the first winter. \u00a0Divide established clumps in late spring. \u00a0From spring onwards fertilize monthly.<\/p>\n

Prone to Stem rot, crown rot, and thrips may cause mottling<\/p>\n

K. uvaria – <\/b><\/strong>This evergreen perennial from South Africa grows 5\u2019 feet tall and 30\u201d wide. \u00a0It produces lax, linear, channeled, finely toothed, coarse, leaves to 24\u201d long.\u00a0\u00a0From mid summer to early autumn it bears flowers, to 1 \u00bd\u201d long, emerging from red buds, that open to rich orange-red and fade to yellow, in slender, oblong-ovoid racemes.<\/p>\n
