There are about 7 species of evergreen shrubs, in this genus. \u00a0They occur in woodland, swamps, and meadows in North America and one from Cuba. \u00a0They produce deep green, leathery leaves with paler undersides, which may carried alternately, in opposite pairs, or in whorls. \u00a0In late spring and early summer it bears showy bowl, cup, or saucer shaped pink to red flowers held in corymbs or racemes. \u00a0They are useful for a shrub border or in woodland garden, the dwarf species and cultivars are suitable for a large rock garden. \u00a0\u00a0All parts may cause severe discomfort if ingested.<\/p>\n

Grow in lime free, moist, humus rich, slightly acidic soil in partial shade or in sun where soil remains reliably moist. \u00a0Mulch annually in spring with leaf mold or pine needles.<\/p>\n

Prone to fungal leaf spots and blights, leaf gall, powdery mildew, weevils, scale insects, lace bugs and borers.<\/p>\n

K. latifolia <\/b><\/strong>\u2018Freckles\u2019 <\/b><\/strong>– Calico Bush – Mountain Laurel – <\/b><\/strong>This dense, bushy shrub grows 5-12\u2019 feet tall and wide. \u00a0It produces alternate, leathery, oval to elliptic-lance shaped, leathery, glossy, dark green leaves with paler undersides, to 5\u201d long. \u00a0From late spring to midsummer, it bears large corymbs, 3-4\u201d or more across, of bowl or cup shaped, pale pink, or flowers ringed with small, red-purple spots just inside the rim, \u00be-1\u201d wide, emerge from distinctive crimped, often dark pink or red buds. \u00a0May take several years to recover from hard pruning.<\/p>\n
