There are around 700-900 species of evergreen perennials, many of which are epiphytic with erect or climbing stems, in this genus. \u00a0They occur from wet mountains forest in tropical and subtropical North and South America. \u00a0It\u2019s a popular houseplant. \u00a0They bear large unlobed, untoothed or palmately lobed glossy broad leathery leaves. \u00a0They also bear white, pink, and orange colored flat or concave spathed (flower with one petal hood) and cylindrical spadices (finger like spike) to 18\u201d long. \u00a0The spadices usually taper evenly upward although may be pendent or contorted. Where able to grow outdoors be sure to plant in humid tropical areas as a border with crowns just above the soil surface and cover with a layer of sphagnum moss to protect the uppermost part from drying out. \u00a0Insure soil is moist, fertile, humus rich, enriched with leaf mold in full or partial shade. \u00a0Divide in rootstock in winter.<\/p>\n

Anthurium scherzerianum <\/b><\/strong>\u2018Rothschildianum\u2019<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Flamingo Flower<\/b><\/strong> \u2013 This native to Costa Rican and Guatemalan is an upright epiphytic perennial that grows 20-24\u201d tall and about 12\u201d wide. \u00a0It produces oblong-elliptic to lance shaped arched or bent sharply back, thick, leathery, dark green leaves. \u00a0Intermittently throughout the year broadly elliptic curled dark red spathes 3-4\u201d with white spots long with yellow spadices.<\/p>\n
