There are around 700-900 species of evergreen perennials, many of which are epiphytic with erect or climbing stems, in this genus. \u00a0They occur from wet mountains forest in tropical and subtropical North and South America. \u00a0It\u2019s a popular houseplant. \u00a0They bear large unlobed, untoothed or palmately lobed glossy broad leathery leaves. \u00a0They also bear white, pink, and orange colored flat or concave spathed (flower with one petal hood) and cylindrical spadices (finger like spike) to 18\u201d long. \u00a0The spadices usually taper evenly upward although may be pendent or contorted. It bears ovoid or spherical berries, which ripen to orange, red, or purple.<\/p>\n

Where not hardy grow indoors in containers or in warm greenhouse. \u00a0Plant in a mix of 1 part fibrous loam, 1 part coarse sand and 2-3 parts leaf mold with additional charcoal soil. \u00a0Provide high humidity and constant temperature with filtered light and full light in winter. \u00a0In the growing season water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks. \u00a0Reduce humidity and water sparingly in winter. \u00a0\u00a0Anthurium scherzerianum are tolerate to drier conditions and are a popular choice for a houseplant.<\/p>\n

Where able to grow outdoors be sure to plant in humid tropical areas as a border with crowns just above the soil surface and cover with a layer of sphagnum moss to protect the uppermost part from drying out. \u00a0Insure soil is moist, fertile, humus rich, enriched with leaf mold in full or partial shade. \u00a0Divide in rootstock in winter.<\/p>\n

Most provide excellent long lasting cut flowers. \u00a0If ingested all parts may cause mild stomach irritation and contact with sap may irritate skin.<\/p>\n

Anthurium crystallinum<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This Colombian upright epiphytic perennial grows 2\u2019 feet tall and in breadth. \u00a0Their cultivated for it\u2019s large broadly ovate to elliptic, velvety deep green leaves which are pink-bronze when young. \u00a0The leaf blades are arched or bent sharply back reaching 12-18\u201d long with prominent white veins. Intermittently through out the year it bears erect and spreading narrow green spathes 3\u201d long with greenish yellow spadices.<\/p>\n
