Alyssum \u2013 Madwort<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are about 170 species from Europe, North Africa, and Southwest and Central Asia of tufted, mat, or hummock forming perennial and sub shrubs, in this genus. \u00a0Mainly low spreaders with small 1\/8-1\u201d elliptical leaves. \u00a0In spring and early summer they are smothered in corymb-like racemes of tiny white, cream, yellow, or pink 4 petaled, cross-shaped flowers. \u00a0Most are less than 8\u201d tall with a few of shrubbier species reaching 24\u201d tall.<\/p>\n

Grow in full sun with gritty moderately fertile well drained soil, ideal for growing in rock crevices and dry stone wall plants, soak in spring and summer. \u00a0They\u2019re fairly frost hardy. \u00a0Trim lightly after flowering to maintain compactness.<\/p>\n

Prone to club root, downy mildew, basal stem rot, root rot<\/i><\/em>, caused by fungi may occur as well as aphids.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

Alyssum spinosum <\/b><\/strong>var. roseum<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Ptilotrichum spinosum <\/b><\/strong>var. roseum<\/b><\/strong> \u2013 growing to a twiggy sub shrub 2\u2019 feet tall and in breadth. \u00a0\u00a0It produces spiny tipped gray-green to silver foliage. \u00a0It bears dense corymb like racemes of light to deep pink flowers.<\/p>\n
