Alocasia \u2013 Elephant\u2019s Ear <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are about 70 species of large leafed rhizomatous and tuberous perennials typical used as annual tropical plants, in this genus. Found in the wild in tropical forest and Southeastern Asia in open, sunny, or shady usually damp sites by streams and marshes. \u00a0The heavily veined heart shaped to arrowhead shape can be anywhere from 8-36\u201d long. \u00a0The leafs can be black, dark violet, bronze, red, or purple with distinctive markings. \u00a0The flower is obscured by foliage and is not very showy. \u00a0Some species are edible and others are poisons causing swelling of tongue and throat, if skin comes in contact with sap it may irritate the skin.<\/p>\n

Intolerant to frost. \u00a0If grown indoors grow in mix of equal parts composted bark loam and sand in filtered light. \u00a0Water freely during growing season and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks. \u00a0Water moderately in winter.<\/p>\n

If grown outdoors grow in moderately fertile humus rich moist but well drained soil in partial shade.<\/p>\n

Prone to mealybugs, scale insects, fungal leaf diseases, bacterial leaf disease <\/i><\/em>are common under glass. Bacterial soft rot<\/i><\/em>\u00a0can occur.<\/p>\n

Alocasia maccrorrhiza <\/b><\/strong>\u2018Violacea\u2019<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Giant taro<\/b><\/strong> \u2013 This species derives from India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia and grows 12-15\u2019 feet tall and 6-8\u2019 feet wide. \u00a0It bears broad arrowhead shaped violet tinged green leaves up to 3-4\u2019 feet long with pale veins. \u00a0It bears insignificant but fragrant, 8\u201d long yellow-green flowers. \u00a0It\u2019s widely cultivated for its edible rhizomes and shoots.<\/p>\n
