A genus of more then 40 species of perennials that dies back at the end of the growing season, then over winter by underground rootstocks grows then continues top growth in the next growing season. \u00a0Native eastern Asia but 2 occur in the wild in Europe. \u00a0One is grown in Japan for its edible roots.<\/p>\n
The leaves, stem from the base of the plant and die back before the plant flowers. \u00a0Some species the leaves may be alternate. \u00a0The leaves are either small lance to rounded to egg shape and may have toothed edges or arranged in 3 from a single stem. \u00a0The \u00bc-3\/4\u201d long bell or funnel shape flowers are pendent or semi-pendent held in racemes or panicles.<\/p>\n
They like light humus rich moist but well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. \u00a0Grow as a border or an open woodland setting, the smaller ones are well suited for rock gardens.<\/p>\n
Prone to Vine weevils<\/i><\/em>\u00a0may attack roots and\u00a0slugs and snails <\/i><\/em>may eat young growth.<\/p>\n Adenophora liliifolia \u2013 Adenophora liliiflora<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This erect perennial found from Central Europe and Northern China to Siberia grows 18\u201d inches tall and afoot wide.
