Aciphylla \u2013 Bayonet plant \u2013 Speargrass \u2013 Spaniard<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013<\/p>\n

There are about 40 species of perennials, in this genus. Although they look like grasses they are not related to grasses. \u00a0Derives from New Zealand and some species are form Australia, found in alpine areas or windswept open grasslands at lower attitudes. \u00a0With a taproot supporting rosettes of flattened linear leaves that are deeply divided, almost to the base with narrow leaves almost like grass blades with vicious spines at their tips. \u00a0Strong long spine stems rise just above the blades bearing masses of small white or yellow-green star shaped flowers protected by spiny bracts.<\/p>\n

Cultivating small ones are easy the larger one is prone to sudden collapse outside their natural environment. \u00a0They need full sun, moist, but well drained, fertile, humus rich, gritty soil deep enough to allow the vertical root to grow. \u00a0Leave dead leaf blades in the clump it acts like insulator.<\/p>\n

Prone to slug<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0damage.<\/p>\n

Aciphylla aurea \u2013 Golden Spaniard \u2013 Taranea<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Grows 3\u2019 feet tall and 5\u2019 feet wide, in a clump, and derives form New Zealand South Islands in dry conditions. \u00a0It has fan shape gray-green leaves, that\u2019s 24\u201d long consisting of narrow long leaflets with bold yellow edges and midribs. \u00a0The stem grows 4\u2019 feet tall and bears golden brown flowers.<\/p>\n
