Hemerocallis – Daylily –<\/b><\/p>\n
There are about 15 species and with over 50,000 cultivars of evergreen, semi evergreen, and herbaceous perennials, in this genus.\u00a0 They occur \u00a0 Daylilies are found at forest margins, in mountainous areas, marshy river valleys, and meadowland in China, Korea and Japan.\u00a0 They are mostly clump forming, and occasionally rhizomatous, with arching, strap shaped, dark green leaves, usually 30-48″\u2019 long, but often only 9-14″ long in dwarf or compact species and cultivars.\u00a0 Flowers are often fragrant, held on erect stems, mainly from late spring to late summer.\u00a0 Many daylilies are remontant, flowering repeatedly during the season.\u00a0 The flowers range in color from almost white through yellow and orange to dark purple and deepest red-black.\u00a0 Most flowers last for only one day, in nocturnal daylilies, the flowers open in late afternoon, and last throughout the night.\u00a0 The flowers of extended-blooming daylilies remain open for at least 16 hours.\u00a0 The flower size varies from 3″ miniatures to giants\u201d or more, single or double and plant height ranges from 24″ to 36″ tall.<\/span><\/p>\n Grow daylilies in a mixed or herbaceous border, some are effective planted in drifts in wild garden.\u00a0 Dwarf daylilies are ideal for a small garden or for containers.<\/span><\/p>\n Grow in fertile, moist but well drained soil, in full sun.\u00a0 Water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks.\u00a0 Mulch in late autumn or spring.\u00a0 Divide every 3-5 years in spring or autumn.\u00a0 Dry conditions and excessive shade will reduce flowering.\u00a0 Place with care flowers will turn to the sun.\u00a0 Generally daylilies are hardy in Zones 3-10.<\/span><\/p>\n Prone to <\/span>rust, hemerocallis gall midge, aphids, spider mites, thrips, slugs and snails, crown rot, bacterial leaf rot, <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>stem rot.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n H. fulva\u00a0 – Tawny Daylily<\/b> – This clump forming, semi evergreen, spreading perennial from China or Japan grows 3′ feet tall and 4′ feet wide.\u00a0 It produces wide, dark bluish green leaves, 12-36″ long.\u00a0 In mid and late summer it bears trumpet shaped, orange-brown flowers, 2 \u00bd-6″ across, with recurved tepals atop branched stems.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2018Europa\u2019 <\/b>– is a robust cultivar bearing tawny-orange flowers with yellow tepal bases<\/span><\/p>\n \u2018Floe Pleno\u2019 – \u2018Kwanzo\u2019<\/b> – grows 30″ tall and has strong erect stems bearing double orange flowers, 6″ across with dark red eyes<\/span><\/p>\n \u2018Kwanzo Variegata\u2019 <\/b>– grows 30″ tall and is similar to \u2018Flore Pleno\u2019, with strong, erect stems, bearing double, red eyed flowers, 5″ across, but it has
