Knautia <\/b><\/strong>–<\/p>\n

There are 60 species of annuals and perennials in this genus. \u00a0Found from limestone grassland, scrub, and woodland in Europe, Caucasus, Russia, and North Africa. \u00a0They have over wintering rosettes of simple to pinnatifid basal leaves, and opposite pairs of stem leaves, which are pinnatifid or simple. \u00a0Tall stems bear cup shaped involucres of bracts, surrounding dense, bluish lilac or reddish purple flower heads. \u00a0They are attractive to bees. \u00a0Grow in a herbaceous border, cottage garden, or wild garden.<\/p>\n

Grow in moderately fertile, well drained, preferably alkaline soil in full sun or part shade.<\/p>\n

Prone to aphids.<\/p>\n

K. macedonica – Scabiosa rumelica <\/b><\/strong>– This clump forming perennial found from Central Balkans into Russia grows 24-32\u201d tall and 18\u201d wide. \u00a0From slender, branched stems it carries pinnatifid basal leaves, to 3\u201d long, each with a large terminal lobe, and simple or pinnatifid stem leaves \u00be-6\u201d long. \u00a0Numerous long lasting, deep purple-red, occasionally pale pink or white flower heads, \u00bd-1 \u00bc\u201d across, with softly bristly, involucres bracts, are borne in mid and late summer.<\/p>\n
