Areca<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are around 50-60 species of single stemmed or a densely clumping clusters of stems palms found growing in wet woodland in humid tropical forest from Malaysia and Indonesia, in this genus. \u00a0Best known in the form betel Palm (Areca catecha) from which betel nuts are obtained-chewed by many people in Asia and the Pacific as a mild narcotic. \u00a0They are grown for their linear or lance-shaped 2 pinnate leaves produced in terminal tuft above a distinct crown shaft with panicles of red, orange, or yellow cup shaped flowers borne beneath them. \u00a0One-sided red or yellow fruits are mostly egg-shaped and in size.<\/p>\n

When grown indoors use soilless potting mix in bright filtered light. \u00a0During the growing season water moderately and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly, keep just moist in winter.<\/p>\n

When able to grow outdoors in a frost free climate place in fertile moist but well-drained soil in partial shade.<\/p>\n

Prone to a few fungal leaf spots, Ganoderma butt rot,<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and spider mites<\/i><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Areca catechu \u2013 Betel Nut Palm \u2013 Pinang<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013This single, slender palm from Malaysia and Singapore can grow 40-80\u2019 feet tall and bears a crown 6-12\u2019 feet wide. \u00a0The green trunk grows 4-6\u201d thick with many rings from old leaf leaving scars. \u00a0The arching pinnate leaves grow to 3-6\u2019 feet long have lance-shaped soft textured, mid green leaflets. \u00a0In summer it bears large panicles to 24\u201d long of pale yellow flowers. \u00a0Orange to red egg shaped 3\u201d long, 2\u201d diameter fruit that contain betel nuts, which can be chewed as a stimulant.<\/p>\n
