There\u2019s some 20 species of biennials and perennial lilies, in this genus. \u00a0They occur from sunny rocky meadows and scrub on dry slopes from the Mediterranean and Turkey to the Caucasus. \u00a0\u00a0From fleshy or fibrous rhizomes it produces grass to spear like bright green sometime with a bluish tint basal and stem leaves. \u00a0It bears racemes, of star shaped yellow or white flowers, on stiffly erect stems up to 5\u2019 feet tall.<\/p>\n

These frost hardy plants are easily grown in moderately fertile, well-drained, sandy loamy deep soil in full sun. \u00a0Divide in late summer and early autumn.<\/p>\n

Prone to slugs, snails, <\/i><\/em>and aphids.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

Asphodeline lutea \u2013 King\u2019s Spear \u2013 Yellow Asphodel \u2013 Asphodel<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This clump forming perennial, from the Mediterranean region grows up to 5\u2019 feet tall. \u00a0\u00a0It produces furrowed, narrowly, triangular glossy, blue green leaves up to 14\u201d long are held along the flower stalk. \u00a0\u00a0In late spring it bears dense racemes up to 8\u201d long of fragrant, star shaped, bright yellow flowers to 1 \u00bc\u201d wide with large ovate bracts.<\/p>\n
