There are about 100 species of mat or tufted annuals, evergreen or deciduous perennials and dwarf twiggy shrubs, in this genus. \u00a0They occur from woodland sites in Europe, Asia, and Australasian. \u00a0Most spread by underground rhizomes. They produce stalkless, narrow, opposite or whorls of 4 or more leaves. \u00a0\u00a0In spring or summer they\u2019re smothered in tiny tubular or funnel shaped flowers with widely spreading lobes are borne on branched, terminal or axillary panicles or cymes usually white, pale pink, or occasional yellow. \u00a0They often develop fragrance as the cut foliage dries out and some were used as strewing herbs. \u00a0One species yields a dye.<\/p>\n

When grown outdoors place in sharply drained, moderately fertile soil in sun or partial shade. \u00a0All Asperula tolerant alkaline soil. \u00a0Protect from excessive winter moisture. \u00a0Divide in spring or autumn.<\/p>\n

Prone to aphids<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and spider mites.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

Asperula nitida <\/b><\/strong>subsp. hirtella \u2013 Asperula nitida subsp. puberula <\/b><\/strong>\u2013 Woodruff \u2013<\/b><\/strong> This cushion forming evergreen perennial from Mountains of Greece and Turkey grows to 4\u201d tall and spreads to 8\u201d wide. \u00a0It produces rosettes of whorled linear to lance shaped rich green leaves to \u00bd\u201d long which have fine hairs along edges. \u00a0In early summer it bears few flowering terminal cymes of narrowly tubular pink flowers to 3\/8\u201d long.<\/p>\n
