There are 2 species of bamboos, in this genus. \u00a0They occur from swampy areas in Southeastern U.S. \u00a0They produce thick, hollow, slender, and jointed stems that can reach 5-30\u2019 feet high. \u00a0The first year stems may be simple but then become branching in the second year. \u00a0From the stem at each node they bear 3-6 leafy branches. \u00a0At various times throughout the year they bear lateral panicles of 5-15 flower spikelets from the branches. \u00a0Great as a dense hedge or as a screen or to create a tropical feel.<\/p>\n

Grow in moist fertile humus rich soil, in a sheltered position in sun or partial shade. \u00a0They may be highly invasive. \u00a0Divide in spring.<\/p>\n

Prone to many different fungi may cause leaf spots<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and dieback<\/i><\/em>\u00a0of culms and rust.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

Arundinaria gigantea macrosperma <\/b><\/strong>subsp. Tecta <\/b><\/strong>\u2013 Arundinaria tecta \u2013 Canebrake<\/b><\/strong> \u2013 Switchcane – <\/b><\/strong>is a name that refers to shorter plants taken off the rhizomes – <\/b>This rapidly spreading bamboo grows to 30\u2019 feet tall and can spread indefinitely. \u00a0It produces yellow green shoots which hold lance shaped leaves to 8\u201d long and lateral panicles of purple spikelets.<\/p>\n
