Arisaema \u2013 Jack in the Pulpit<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are around 150 species of spring or summer flowering tuberous or rhizomatous perennial from moist woodland and rocky wastelands from the Himalayas, China, Japan, and North America, in this genus. \u00a0Grown for their attractive unusually spathes. \u00a0They bear 1 or 2 simple, palmately lobed or palmate mid green leaves per shoot. \u00a0Dense clusters of spherical to oblong, red to orange berries, follow flowers.<\/p>\n

When grown indoors plant in deep clay containers in equal parts of loam, leaf mold, and grit in bright indirect light. \u00a0Water freely during growing season and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly. \u00a0During dormancy keep cool and barely moist.<\/p>\n

When grown outdoors, grow in moist but well drained in neutral to acidic, humus rich soil in a cool partially shaded site. \u00a0Will tolerate moderate to severe frost.<\/p>\n

Prone to slug, vine weevils, rust, anthracnose, leaf blight, (Streptobotrys),<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and dasheen mosaic virus<\/i><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Arisaema serratum \u2013 Arisaema japonicum<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0– This tall tuberous perennial from China, Korea, and Japan reaches 36\u201d tall. \u00a0It produces 2 palmate leaves each with 7-20 elliptic to lance shaped lobes, 2-6\u201d long on a mottled stem. \u00a0In spring bears a hooded spathe, 3-5\u201d long, from pale green to purple, and may be spotted or stripped. \u00a0It has a 2\u201d yellow appendage.<\/p>\n
