There is a sole species of a monoecious, deciduous shrub or small tree, related to Hazels (Hamamelis), in the Hamamelidaceae family, in this genus. They are found naturally occurring on streambanks in mountains of China. It produces simple, alternate leaves, and is mainly grown for its catkin like racemes of small flowers, borne in late spring before the leaves. Grow in a shrub border or woodland garden.<\/p>\n

Grow in moist but well drained, moderately fertile, humus rich, acidic soil, in full sun with some midday shade, or in partial shade.<\/p>\n

S. henryi<\/strong> – This spreading shrub or small tree from Central and Western China grows 25′ feet tall and 15′ feet wide. It produces broadly oval to elliptic, pointed, bristle toothed leaves, to 7″ long. In late spring, bears catkin like racemes of small green flowers: males are 2 \u00bd” long, females are 1 1\/4″ long, and elongate to 6″ in fruit. The fruit are woody 2 valved capsules, 3\/4″ across.<\/p>\n
