There are 5 annual, rarely perennial grasses naturally occurring along field margins and on disturbed ground in Central America. \u00a0The sturdy stems bear lance shaped leaves in 2 ranks. \u00a0They produce terminal spike like male panicles (the tassels), axillary female inflorescence (the ears) consist of numerous flowers arranged in longitudinal row on a thickened axis (the cob). \u00a0The female flowers, each with a long, silky style, are enclosed within spathe bracts (the Husks) and mature into fleshy kernels. \u00a0Z. mays (corn) are an important cereal crop in tropical and temperate regions. \u00a0A number of ornamental cultivars are valued for their multicolored ears and their variegated foliage. \u00a0Grow in a mixed border or as accent plants in summer bedding designs.<\/p>\n

Grow in a warm, sheltered site in fertile, moist but well drained soil in full sun.<\/p>\n

Prone to downy mildew, damping off, rust, smut, <\/i><\/em>and a wide variety of fungal spots. \u00a0Corn earworm,<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and many other insect pests are frequent problems on some cultivars.<\/p>\n

Zea mays var. everta \u2013 Popcorn \u2013 <\/strong>This grass, which grows to 4-10\u2019 feet tall and 2\u2019 feet wide. \u00a0It produces long, pointed leaves, to 4\u2019 feet long. \u00a0Flowers are generally blue and spikey. \u00a0It bears a wide variety of kernel sizes and husk colors, and usually just one ear per plant, in late summer. \u00a0Sow seed 6\u201d apart. \u00a0Matures in 100-120 days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
