Named after a British physician Dr. Clarke Abel. \u00a0This genus contains 30 species ornamental evergreen and deciduous shrubs. \u00a0This genus belongs to Caprifoliaceae or honeysuckle family. Found in Northern Hemisphere, from eastern Asia to Mexico.<\/p>\n
These plants usually have glossy opposite leaves and funnel form or tubular flowers usually white or pinkish sometimes with orange blotches, some also have reddish sepals, which add to their ornamental appeal.<\/p>\n
Can be individual planted or as a hedge. Abelia=s thrive in any well-drained and moderately fertile soil, either sun or slight shade. \u00a0Abelia=s are moderately frost hardy, so sheltered away from cold\/drying winds. Best pruned in late fall, cut flowering branches and some older growth to ground, keep arching habit.<\/p>\n
Prone to anthracnose, leaf spots, powdery mildew<\/i><\/em>, and\u00a0fungal root rots <\/i><\/em>occur.<\/p>\n A. chinensis –<\/b><\/strong> From central and eastern China was introduced into cultivation around 1844. \u00a0It forms a small shrub 5 feet tall and 8 feet wide with moderately fragrant funnel shape white flowers, tinted with rose that bloom form late summer to autumn.
