B. thunbergii – Japanese Barberry – Thunberg Barberry <\/strong>– This dense, low growing, rounded, deciduous shrub from Japan grows 3-5′ feet tall and 8′ feet wide. It\u2019s spines are not particularly fierce. It produces rounded, smooth edged leaves, to 1 1\/4″ long, fresh green above and bluish green beneath, turning orange and red in autumn. In mid spring it bears umbel like racemes of 2-5 bell shaped, rarely solitary, red tinged, pale yellow flowers, \u00bd” long, followed in late summer into autumn by ellipsoid, glossy red fruit, to 3\/8″ long. Excellent for hedging and urban condition and is the most widely grown.<\/p>\n
