\nThere are 33 tufted or clump forming, evergreen, perennial grasses in this genus. They are found naturally occurring in damp or dry grasslands in the hills and mountains of Europe. They bear narrow, usually linear leaves, and dense, spherical to cylindrical, spike like panicles of flowers. Grown for their colorful foliage, they are suitable for the front of a herbaceous or mixed border, in a rock garden, or in a wildflower meadow.
\nGrow in moderately fertile, well drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil in full sun or dappled shade. Divide in spring.<\/p>\n

S. heufleriana – Balkan Moor Grass – This densely tufted, mound forming, evergreen perennial from Southeastern Europe grows 24″ tall and 18″ wide. It produces linear, bright green leaves, to 18″ long, grayish green beneath and initially glaucous. White spikelets, aging to deep purple, are borne in panicles up to 1 1\/4″ long, from late spring to late summer.
