this evergreen, woody stemmed, perennial climber from India and Sri Lanka can grow 12′ feet tall and wide or more. It produces ovate, heart shaped, leathery, deeply veined, dark green leaves, to 5″ inches long. In summer, bears small white flowers in spike to 4 1\/2″ inches long, on the swollen stem joint opposite of the leaf, followed by spherical fruit that are red when ripe.<\/p>\n

Grow in fertile, well drained soil in dappled shade. Support climbing stems.<\/p>\n

Prone to fungal root rot, Pepper weevil and pepper flea beetles.<\/p>\n
