There are about 180 species of virtually stemless, evergreen, mainly epiphytic perennials (bromeliads), in this genus. They occur in South Florida, Central America, the West Indies, and North and Western South America. They occur mainly in the Andean rainforest, to 11,500′ feet high. They produce lance shaped leaves which form a funnel shaped rosettes, above or within which flower heads of tubular, white or yellow flowers, usually surrounded by colorful floral bracts, are borne on conspicuous, yellow, orange, or bright red stems, in summer, Where temperatures drop below 59 degrees Fahrenheit, grow in a warm greenhouse or as a houseplant.
Indoors, grow in epiphytic bromeliad potting mix in bright filtered or indirect light, or grow epiphytically on artificial tree branches. When in growth, mist daily, preferably in the ealry morning. In winter, keep barely moist and do not mist. Keep vase filled with water when in growth. Fertilize only when in full growth, during the warmer months.
Prone to mealybugs, and fungi causing leaf spots.

There are about 50 species of mostly stemless, evergreen, mainly dwarf, terrestrial perennials (bromeliads), in this genus. They occur in soil or on rocks in moist to dry, forest regions, at altitudes up to 5,000′ feet in Eastern Brazil. The strap to spoon shaped, finely toothed, wavy edged, sometime attractively zoned, striped, or banded with white or red leaves are borne in flat, star like rosettes with a small central funnel. In some species, offsets form in the leaf axils, others produce them from creeping rhizomes. In summer, inconspicuous, star shaped, often scented, white or greenish white flowers are produced in sunken, corymb like inflorescences in the center of each rosette.

Indoors, grow in terrestrial bromeliad potting mix in full or bright filtered light with moderate to high humidity. In the growing season, water moderately but carefully, mist regularly with tepid water, and apply a dilute fertilizer monthly, reduce water slightly in winter.

Prone to scale insects, and mealy bugs.

C. bivittatus – This stemless bromeliad grows 4″ tall and 12″ wide. It produces rosettes of about 20 strap shaped, wavy edged, toothed, green leaves, to 7″ long, longitudinal striped white or pink. Few flowered corymbs of white flowers, 1″ long, are borne in summer.
